APRIL 18–21 FRIDAY – MONDAY
ARARAT
Featured at the Toronto Film
Festival, Atom Egoyan’s most recent film juxtaposes two narratives
– the 1915 genocide of one million Armenian citizens by the Turkish
government, and the making of a fictional modern-day film on the subject. The
cast includes Charles Aznavour as the director, Eric Bogosian as the
screenwriter, and Christopher Plummer as a customs
inspector who suspects the production assistant (David Alpay) of smuggling heroin
into Turkey. In this moral jigsaw puzzle, the great Armenian painter Arshile
Gorky (Simon Abkarian) weeps before his canvas. “Icy
smooth ... extraordinarily intelligent.” Jeffrey Anderson, San Francisco Examiner. U.S.A. 2002.
Rated R. 116 mins.
